Panorama Dome and More (Mt. Baker) 10-17-2013

Enjoyed a fantastic fall day exploring between Heather Meadows, Austin Pass, Artist Point Panorama Dome and the Bagley Lakes area.

Since this hike was more than two months ago and I have numerous other Artist Point reports about the area there isn't much to add so I'll try to keep this brief.

6.25 miles, 1,300 feet of elevation gain.

Started at Heather Meadows as the road was already closed for the season after an early season snowfall.

Photos in no particular order.

Started at Heather Meadows.

Followed the Wild Goose Trail to Austin Pass and then up to Artist Point.

Snow covered the Table Mountain Trail so I chose to not head up there being solo for the day.

Stopped at the Lake Ann trail head on the way down and followed a service road (which is the 'cattrack' during ski season) all the way up to the top of Panorama Dome where two chair lifts terminate.

Mt. Baker Ski Area staff were doing maintenance or setting up the chair lifts... they were in operation but the lift would stop for a minute or two every time a new chair arrived at the top.  No people in sight... must have been doing work from the bottom side.

Returned the way I came and headed down to the Austin Pass Picnic area where I scouted around, crossed the cement arched bridge to the opposite side of the lake and followed the trail back to Heather Meadows beneath Mount Herman to the car.

Photos with captions where appropriate but in no particular order.

This photo is of one of the Bagley Lakes.  I really like this image for a number of reasons:  First, I like the "Winter Overtaking Fall" aspect with the snow in the cold dark shadows overtaking the warm fall colors as you move from left to right in the photo.  Second, the arched cement bridge is located at the lower right portion of the lake.

Bagley Creek as it flows out of Bagley Lakes.  A trail circumnavigates the lakes and creek here:

Someone near the Bagley Lake inflow being stalked by Polar Bears.  Maybe they are dogs but you can't prove it one way or the other from this photo.

Nisqually National Wildlife Refuge (Kayak) 10-12-2013

The Nisqually National Wildlife Refuge (NNWR) looks like a fantastic place!  Put it on your list to visit sometime soon (when there isn't a Federal furlough)!

My dad and I met up one day long ago (Oct 12, 2013) to explore the NNWR by kayak.  Unfortunately for us, we didn't realize our selection of dates coincided with the opening day of duck hunting season.  Keep that in mind if you opt to retrace our steps (paddles, actually).

A little Googling led us to the Luhr Beach Boat Launch which appeared to be the launch closest to the NNWR.  It's also a boat launch that duck hunters like to use.  Pro:  We learned about opening day.  Con: The launch was a bit busy, being used by folks with guns.  And Boats.  And Camoflauge.  And dogs.

We launched our boats shortly after high tide and made our way out to the NNWR area, trying to steer clear of areas where the hunters may be congregating.

Weather was fantastic and paddling was pleasant.  We were fighting a bit of a current in some places but our efforts seemed to result in reasonable progress.

There are a lot of little sand and grass islands in the area and depending on the tides it is possible to get yourself land locked or high centered in one of these little sloughs as the tide recedes.  It was neat to paddle in and out of these passages although we encountered dead ends a few times which necessitated a turn-around.  At times we found ourselves paddling in very shallow waters... possibly a 12 inches deep or less.

The NNWR bridge or walkway is very impressive.  That thing just seemed to go on and on forever... must be at least two miles of elevated walking on that thing. The structure alone would make a visit worthwhile in my opinion.

Signs along the bottom on the bridge/walkway indicated watercraft are not allowed in the NNWR protected areas so we remained on our approach side.  Instead of heading back to Luhr, we opted to paddle up McAllister Creek for a ways.  It was a scenic area, and seemingly completely free of hunters.  The hunters must have all been congregating on the east side of the NNWR; we were completely on our own out there.

A return visit at low tide would be fantastic.  Hopefully we could coordinate it with a 'on foot' exploration of the NNWR while we are in the neighborhood.

Happy Paddling!

The 2014 Day Planner

My 2014 'Contemplating Adventures' Day Planner is now available for anyone who wants to flip through the 'Preview'.

Sure, you can buy one if you want to (I'd be shocked, and thrilled) but if you are going to do that you might as well just visit Blurb and create your own customized Planner.

I'm just posting it here in case some people are interested in browsing my photos or interested in ideas on what to do with their  own planner.

FWIW, I went snowshoeing today and came home with some great photos for the 2015 version. Coincidentally, one of the neat photos from today looks remarkably similar to the cover photo for 2014's Day Planner. So be it... that's what happens when you keep visiting awesome spots over and over.

Happy Trails!

Itinerary for 12-19-2013

Just a quick note... going snowshoeing with the Mount Baker Club on Thursday, December 19, 2013.  Meeting at the store in Maple Falls at 9am and heading up to White Salmon Lodge or possibly Heather Meadows.  Destination TBD based on conditions... Razor Hone Knob and Artist Point are two potential  but likely destinations (one or the other of course).

Hopefully I'll be able to prouduce or at least draft my missing trip reports from October over the next few days and have them all online by January 2nd.  Wouldn't that be nice?

Happy Holidays!
